55000 ton Dry Dock Expansion Project

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair is located on San Diego Bay. It’s a 17-acre facility that includes a floating dry dock known as the Pride of San Diego, which can lift 26,000 tons. The yard is set to add a 950-foot floating dry dock that can lift 55,000 tons. It will be the company’s largest dry dock in the U.S. when it enters service in 2017. BAE Systems also has just completed Pier 4, a 415-foot-long, 64-foot-wide pier.  Triton Engineers, Inc. served as lead design for both projects – New Pier 4 and Bulkhead; and Pier 1 Dry Dock Expansion.  Four major facilities were designed to support berthing and operation of the dry dock including:

  • 1. Construction of an underwater bulkhead adjacent to the north edge of Pier 1 to support local deepening at the dry dock berth;
  • 2. Dredging and excavation to deepen the dry dock berth;
  • 3. Construction of an independent mooring dolphin and hardened section of Pier 1 to secure the dry dock; and
  • 4. Construction of fixed ramp wharves to enable vehicle and pedestrian access to the dry dock.
